In our family, it has been a while since we have faced the prospect of a new baby. You know how it is, the adults are reaching “that age” – the time when they stop popping the kids out, and the kids are not old enough to have kids yet. So, you get a brief lull in the (as they say) pitter patter of little feet. Well, we have a new baby on the way, in a roundabout manner. More than ten years ago, Kelly came into our lives. The daughter of a good friend, she started baby-sitting our young daughter; and she sort of became part of the family. I helped her with her homework, and my wife helped her with life. You know how it is, there are some things a teenage girl just can’t discuss with her mother.
Over time, we were there for her when she needed a little extra hand: high school graduation, first love, first job, and then the biggie – her wedding. So, while she wasn’t what you would call ‘real’ family, she was part of our family – and always will be! She made us godparents to her first child, little Hayley, and now she’s getting ready to have her second. Hayley (now five) is quite excited about getting a new little sister; seems like all kids go through that, at least initially. We’ll wait and see how she feels after the baby arrives, and wakes Hayley in the middle of the night! Ah, now there is the true test of sibling love.
So, we’re assembling gifts for the new baby girl (yeah, the ultrasound has confirmed what she’s having). Our daughter found some neat baby toys at a local store, and my wife has shopped both online and at the stores for clothes. Me, I helped put together the new stroller and crib, and found a nice gift basket over at The Basket Spot. It’s always nice when you can give a variety of things to the family. I went with the “Arrive in Style” basket; the pink one, of course.
My wife and I are still wondering: is she going to ask us to be godparents again?
